Currency exchange offices in Dushanbe reportedly experience shortage of dollars

Date:

DUSHANBE, December 30, 2014, Asia-Plus — Currency exchange offices in Dushanbe are reportedly experiencing shortage of dollars on the eve of the new year.

On December 30, practically all exchange currency points operating in Dushanbe suspended selling U.S. dollars.  Operators of the exchange points explained the situation by lack of U.S. dollars.

Only few currency exchange offices have sold U.S. dollars at the rate of 5.55 somoni for one U.S. dollar.

Meanwhile, an average market purchase rate of the dollar against the somoni on December 30 was 1:5.42.

Representatives of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) attribute frequent fluctuation in the exchange rate of the somoni against the dollar to the ongoing trends in Russia’s economy and the fall in the value of the Russian ruble (RR).

Russian media sources report the exchange rate of the Russian ruble against the dollar on December 29 fell to 58:1.
