DUSHANBE, February 25, 2015, Asia-Plus — A regional seminar for experts from Central Asia’s nations on issues related to regional cooperation in countering the threats, emanating from foreign terrorists-militants is going on Dushanbe.

A three-day seminar that kicked off yesterday has brought together researchers and experts from Central Asia’s nations, Afghanistan and Europe to discuss approaches to combating this menace.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the seminar, U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan, Ms. Susan Elliott, pointed to the necessity of countering information spread by terrorist groups.

“We should engage civil society in countering these groups and propaganda carried out by them through Internet,” said Ms. Elliott.

She noted that the United States was working with religious leaders and persons participating in various religious events so that they would counter spread of extremism and radicalism.

“We want to develop projects aiming to propagate peace through communication.  We conduct training seminars for religious leaders so that they would work with people at risk,” Ambassador Elliott noted.

Speaking at the seminar, Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan Igor Lyakin-Frolov noted that international cooperation in combating terrorism and religious extremism had slackened lately.  He pointed to the necessity of consolidation of potentials of all religious organizations under the aegis of the UN counter-terrorism subdivisions for development of international dialogue.  “It is also important to rely on potential of civil society and media,” Russian ambassador noted.
