DUSHANBE, July 31, 2015, Asia-Plus — Six employees of the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) have been brought to account on the basis of the findings of the last audit conducted by the Accounts Chamber at Tajik central bank.

The Accounts Chamber head Dilmurod Davlatzoda told reporters in Dushanbe on July 31 that the audit was conducted at the NBT following a serious situation that emerged in the country’s currency market in the first quarter of this year.

“The audit findings have shown that 37 lending institutions, including 16 commercial banks and 21 microfinance organizations, were purchasing foreign currency from the Tajik central bank during this period and were selling it to the population.  Although these transactions are legal, a number of violations were committed.  They, in particular, did not pay 20 million somoni in taxes,” Davlatzoda said.

According to him, case materials of six employees of Tajik central bank have been sent the prosecutor’s office.

He further added that the Accounts Chamber specialists had also revealed cases of artificial increase in the currency exchange rate.

We will recall that the NBT head Jamshed Nourmahmadzoda told reporters on July 21 that the somoni depreciation has resulted from, first of all, “increase in the exchange market pressure that was observed in the country in the second half of 2014.”

According to him, “some speculators” who wanted to use that tendency in their own interest have facilitated the sharp devaluation of the Tajik national currency.

“When the NBT team was renewed, a couple of people engaged in illegal currency transactions were spreading various rumors.  They wanted to take advantage of the uncertainty that existed in the country’s currency market that time but they failed to gain their point,” Nourmahmadzoda said.
