Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on July 22 congratulated Mr. Ram Nath Kovind on his election as the President of India, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

In his message of congratulations, Tajik leader, in particular, noted that Tajikistan and India have historical and cultural commonality that allow the countries to build their relationships on the basis of mutual understanding, equality, good-neighborhood and mutual trust.  

The president of Tajikistan expressed hope that joint efforts will bring cooperation between the two countries to a higher level.     

Mr. Ram Nath Kovind has won the presidential election after securing over two-thirds of the total electoral college votes.  He will be sworn-in as the 14th President of India on July 25.  

Mr. Kovind obtained 65.65 percent of votes from the electoral college, while his opponent, Meira Kumar secured 34.35 percent.

Kovind secured 2930 votes with a value of 7,02,044.  Meira Kumar reportedly got 1,844 votes with the value of 3,67,314.

The presidential election on July 17 reportedly saw close to 100 percent polling where a total of 771 members of Parliament and 4,109 legislators were eligible to cast votes.
