In a report released at a news conference in Khujand, the administrative center of Sughd province, the head of the Interior Ministry’s office for Sughd, Sharif Nazarzoda, noted on July 27 that two terrorist acts have been prevented in the province.

According to him, criminals were going to commit terrorist acts in Jabborrasoulov and Istaravshan districts.

“Masterminds of the terrorist act that was supposed to be committed in Jabborrasoulov district were staying abroad,” said Nazarzoda.  “One of members of that group was arrested in the province and his four accomplices were arrested in the territory of foreign state.”

“In Istaravshan district, criminals were going to attack local law enforcement authorities,’ Sughd police chief noted.

He further said that over the first six months of this year, four residents of the province who had been wanted by police on suspicion of committing extremism-related crimes had voluntarily returned home.  They have been exempted from punishment, Nazarzoda added.

Recall, Tajiks who voluntarily return from fighting in Syria and Iraq and express remorse are exempt from punishment under Article 187 of Tajikistan’s Penal Code.
