DUSHANBE, October 22, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan accounts for 70 percent of all drugs seized in Central Asia, the press service of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) told Tass on Monday.

According to members of CSTO permanent commissions, “being a source of financial support to international terrorism, extremism and trans-national crime, the contraband of drugs from Afghanistan is one of the main threats to peace and stability in Central Asia”.

“Not being drug producer itself, the Republic of Tajikistan has become owing to its geopolitical situation one of the main transit countries in the spread of drugs on the so-called northern route: Central Asia-Russia-Europe,” parliamentarians stressed.

“At the present moment, the share of Tajikistan in drugs seized in Central Asia is 70 percent, and on that figure the republic holds the third place in the world and the first among countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States,” they added.
