This year, Shuroi Ulamo (Council of Ulema — an Islamic council that issues fatwas (religious rulings) and religious guidance to Islamic religious organizations) has set the contribution for zakat for Muslims having annual income of no less than 21,000 somoni (TJS) at TJS5205, according to the Islamic Center of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Last year, the Council of Ulema set the contribution for zakat for Tajik Muslims having annual income above 20,000 somoni at 500.00 somoni.
Zakat is a form of alms-giving treated in Islam as a religious obligation or tax,] which, by Quranic ranking, is next after prayer (salat) in importance.

Today, in most Muslim-majority countries, zakat contributions are voluntary, while in a handful (Libya, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen), zakat is mandated and collected by the state.
Shias, unlike Sunnis, traditionally regarded zakat as a private and voluntary decision, and they give zakat to imam-sponsored rather than state-sponsored collectors.
Meanwhile, the rate of Sadaqat al-Fitr has been set this year at 5.00 somoni. Sadaqat al-Fitr is a duty which is required of every Muslim during the holy month of Ramadan, whether male or female, minor or adult as long as he/she has the means to do so.
This amount is reportedly based on an average price for two kilograms of wheat.
