As of January 1, 2021, the population of Tajikistan has been 9.504 million, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan. 

Last year, natural population growth in the country reportedly amounted to 2.0 percent, that is the population increased by almost 198,000 people.  

In the territorial cross section the population growth (the increase in the number of individuals in a population) was: Khatlon Province – 82,900 people; Districts Subordinate to the Center – 49,500 people; Sughd Province – 49,400 people Dushanbe – 13,300 people; and the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) – 2,900 people.  

Last year, the number births was almost 240,000 and the number of deaths was about 42,000. 

As of January 1, 2021, the population of GBAO has been estimated at 230,900; Dushanbe – 879,500; Districts Subordinate to the Center – 2,214,800; Sughd Province – 2,753,700; and Khatlon Province – 3,425,000
