Tajik Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim says a point working group of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan is discussing the possibility of constructing a rail link connecting the Tajik northern city of Panjakent and the Uzbek city of Samarkand.

According to him, this issue was discussed at the latest meetings of the Joint Tajik-Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation that were held in Dushanbe and Tashkent.

“It's about construction of a railroad line that is planned to be constructed at the expense of entrepreneurs of the two countries,” the minister said.

According to him, the main question is to what extent it will be possible to download the intended railway line.

Ibrohim stressed that this railroad line is planned to be used for freight and passenger carriages.

“For example, this railway line could be used by tourists to visit the ancient town of Sarazm [located in the northern Tajikistan – Asia-Plus],” the minister added.

Recall, delegations of the transport ministries of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan met in Dushanbe on May 28 to discuss prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of transportation.

They, in particular, discussed the project aimed at laying a railroad line from Panjakent (Tajikistan) to Bulungur Railway Station/Zavodskaya Railway Station in Uzbekistan.
