Three agreements, signed between the defense ministries of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on military cooperation, were ratified by Tajikistan’s lower chamber (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament in late December.

The Justice Ministry’s legal information website says one of these documents on military intelligence collaboration provides for exchanging data on terrorist and extremist organizations.

The sides reportedly also agreed to inform each other about the growth of terrorist threats and actions against sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of both the nations that signed the agreement and other countries of Central Asia.

The agreement also provides for conducting joint exercises for servicemen of units of the army and special intelligence.

The government-to-government agreement on air defense cooperation reportedly provides for exchange of information about the air situation; assistance to aircraft in distress;  exchange of experience in the field of military construction (aviation and air defense); joint training of troops and military command bodies; and training of personnel for air force and air defense.

The governments of the two countries also signed an agreement on collaboration in the field of use of airspace and airfields “by aircraft of state aviation under force majeure.”

In accordance with this agreement, the crew has the right to request permission for a short-term crossing of the airspace of the receiving state in case of force majeure and disasters.

The agreements were reportedly signed in Dushanbe in June last year for the period of five years; on the expiry of that period, they will be automatically renewed for subsequent one-year period.
