In the framework of the European Union Rural Development Programme II, the Integrated Rural Development Project/ GIZ “Towards Rural Inclusive Growth and Economic Resilience (TRIGGER)” entered into a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to facilitate access to water resources based on their equitable and sustainable distribution and their use by various stakeholders.

A joint initiative of the Project “Technical Taskforce for Tajikistan Water Sector Reform” will help in achieving these goals, where UNDP as an implementing partner will support the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MEWR) in advancing water reform.

This initiative will not only ensure the availability and sustainable use of water resources and sanitation but will also make an important contribution to ensuring food security and access to quality nutrition for the population.

The partnership will focus on the following goals:

• Collaboration in coordination and water-sector knowledge management across all water sector stakeholders

• Broadening awareness of the reform process in Tajikistan and the involvement of Tajikistan in solving water problems

• Ensuring MEWR staff have access to global developments in water sector reform and communicating globally on Tajikistan’s engagement with water issues

• Improving and developing the legal basis for the reform

• Strengthening use of the integrated water resource management approach, and addressing issues of planning, water sector risk management, finance and gender

• Integrating water, climate, energy, food and biodiversity related policy through a water-food-energy-ecosystems approach (WEFE Nexus).

Thus, Integrated Rural Development Project/TRIGGER will build MEWR capacities in implementing above mentioned components and support the National Development Strategy 2030 with a special attention to water and food security of the population of Tajikistan.

The Integrated Rural Development Project (IRDP)/ GIZ “Towards Rural Inclusive Growth and Economic Resilience (TRIGGER)” is a joint project of the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to boost the added value of agricultural production in Tajikistan.
