«We call on both sides to ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire and to make every effort to reduce tensions and reach a sustainable solution to existing differences as soon as possible», – says EU statement on the situation on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The statement also expresses sympathy for the large number of victims of the conflict.

"Violent clashes have taken place in recent days between border guards on various sections of the border between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan. We express our sympathy to those directly affected. This escalation along the common border is damaging regional stability", – stated in the statement.

The EU also welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached on Friday.

The statement noted that the Organization, through its Special Representative for Central Asia and the EU Delegations in both countries, has established diplomatic contacts with the authorities of the two countries.

"We call for the settlement of any differences through peaceful, diplomatic means. The EU reaffirms its offer of assistance, as well as continued strong political support for stability and prosperity in the region", – said in a statement.
