500 tons of seeds of elite wheat varieties and 1,250 tons of minerals have been allocated to seed-growing farms in Tajikistan, according to the press center of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) of Tajikistan.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Government Body on Development of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship have already started distributing seeds among the seed-growing farms.

To increase the yield of winter wheat they reportedly use seeds of the following elite wheat varieties: Grom; Alekseyevich; and Timiryazevka-150.

It is to be noted that elite wheat seeds that were distributed to the farms last year gave a good harvest.   Now, as part of the creation of a revolving fund, the Ministry of Agriculture has the opportunity to provide other farms with quality seeds.

According to specialists, the Grom and Alekseyevich elite wheat varieties are resistant to drought and disease.

Agrarians say more than 40,000 tons of wheat seeds are required for annual sowing.

“In case of expansion of the sown area on irrigated lands, we can get a harvest of at least 5 tons from 1 hectare through the purchase of high quality seeds,” they noted.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, this year’s reserves of grain crop seeds amount to 86,823 tons, including 77,663 tons of wheat seeds.

The analysis has shown that only 37 tons of them, or 0.04 percent, are elite seeds, 3,679 tons (4.24 percent) are seeds of the first reproduction, 21,205 tons (24.42 percent) are seeds of the second reproduction, 25,586 tons (29.5 percent) are seeds of the third reproduction, and 36,313 tons (41.8 percent) are ordinary or so-called conditional seeds.
