Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda, heading a government commission, has visited Temourmalik and Baljuvon districts (Kulob zone of Khatlon province) to get acquainted with the progress of work to eliminate the consequences of natural disasters and rehabilitate the river bank protection works, the Khatlon governor’s office says.

It was noted that in Temourmalik district, the most affected areas are villages of Bahmanroud, Tanobchii Bolo and Tanobchii Poyon as well as the Khomroviyo area.

Torrential rain caused floods and mudslide, which destroyed some of the riverbank protection works in Surkhob and Shuraksai rivers.

Restoration work is under way in the district.

The prime minister reportedly instructed specialists to develop new projects to strengthen the riverbanks and continue the restoration work in accordance with modern requirements.

The work on installing reinforced concrete slabs to prevent future natural disasters is reportedly under in Khatlon’s Kulob zone.

The commission members also carefully examined the destroyed sections of banks of Surkhob and Obimazor rivers, as well as Gurdra area and Baljuvon district.  In some places, water destroyed protective dams.

It was noted that the Government of Tajikistan will provide additional assistance for these purposes.  The specialists have been instructed to develop projects and carry out bank protection work in the affected areas.

In Baljuvon district, the work on rehabilitation of riverbank protection works is under way due to funds provided by the government and local entrepreneurs.

As it had been reported earlier, damage caused to Tajikistan’s economy by natural disasters last month is estimated at more than 44 million somonis.

The Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan said on June 3 that according to the preliminary data, 15 residential buildings were destroyed and 9 others were partially damaged by natural disasters that hit the country on May 5, 10, 17, 18 and 25.

256 natural disasters were reportedly registered in Tajikistan from May 3 to May 26.  According to the preliminary data, six schools and preschool institutions, 250 kilometers of roads, 27 bridges, 15.2 kilometers of electricity transmission lines, 87.7 kilometers of river bank protection works, 800 meters of communications links, 92.6 kilometers of water supply lines and canals, 14.7 kilometers of mudslide drain systems, 2 kilometers of water and sewer networks, 10 pump stations and waterworks, 25 fish ponds and 1,076 hectares of farmland were damaged by natural disasters last month.

Besides, 137 head of cattle, 501 cattle of sheep and goods, 62 head of poultry and 169 bee colonies were killed by natural disasters last month.

Recall, the Emergencies Committee said on May 6 that mudslides and floods caused by heavy rains killed three women on May 5. The mudslides were registered in Sughd and Khatlon province, and the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), as well as in several districts surrounding Dushanbe.  The mudflows reportedly left dead two women in Varzob district and one woman in the village of Bodomazor, which is subordinate to the city of Istaravshan in Sughd province.
