At the beginning of 2024, the total number of bloggers registered with Tajikistan's tax authorities reached 114. According to the Tax Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, this marks an increase of 26 registered bloggers compared to the previous year.
Specifically, the Tax Committee reports that 71 bloggers are registered as individual entrepreneurs and operate under a business certificate, while 43 are registered as legal entities.
The tax authorities emphasize that the total income of bloggers in 2024 amounted to 27 million somonis (approximately US$2.5 million). Of this amount, taxes and other mandatory payments accounted for 4.8 million somonis (US$440,000).
The Committee acknowledges that the actual number of bloggers in the country is significantly higher. However, identifying, registering, and taxing them remains a challenge, as the process requires considerable time and effort.
It is worth noting that in 2021, Tajikistan introduced mandatory taxation for bloggers earning income from social media and YouTube, including revenue from lotteries and giveaways.
According to the country’s tax legislation, a blogger registered as an individual entrepreneur under a business certificate pays taxes under a simplified system at a rate of 6% of their total income.
Meanwhile, bloggers registered as legal entities pay an 18% tax on their profits, calculated after deducting expenses from their total revenue.
Registration of bloggers with the tax authorities of Tajikistan began in 2020 and they had until April 1, 2021 to show up at the tax service to register and pay taxes on any profits.
At the time, the country’s tax officials noted that some popular local bloggers and others are posting videos to YouTube that carry advertising.
According to them, popular local bloggers have received money by advertising products and products of large companies on their pages and channels, and therefore must pay taxes.
