Kazakhstan intends to build the Turgundi – Herat railway line in Afghanistan in the next two years. This was announced on September 9 at a government meeting by Deputy Transport Minister Maksat Kaliakparov, Ferghana writes.
According to him, the length of the road will be 120 kilometers.
" For today, the financing structure has been developed and work is underway to attract investors," – Kaliakparov said, adding that the project is scheduled to be implemented in 2026-2027.
The new highway, as the Deputy minister stressed, will allow for the export and transit of goods to Afghanistan with access to the markets of Pakistan and India.
In addition, Kazakhstan intends to open a transport and logistics company in Herat to promote the project.
The Kazakh authorities have not yet disclosed the amount of investments. However, the Afghan side announced in the spring that Astana was ready to invest about $500 million in construction.
It is also planned to lay a fiber-optic cable along the railway.
This will create conditions for the development of digital infrastructure, improve the safety and quality of train traffic management, and in the future provide settlements with high-speed Internet.
