DUSHANBE, April 27, 2010, Asia-Plus  — The Dushanbe municipal authorities have decided to gradually withdraw China-made economy family cars, popularly known as “tangem” and used as fixed-route taxis in the city, Deputy Mayor, Abdulhomid Sheraliyev, told reporters in Dushanbe on April 26.

According to him, some 6,000 China-made economy family cars, used as fixed-route taxis, are currently running in Dushanbe, while only 1,238 “tangem” owners have license to drive public transport.

“These vehicles will be gradually replaced by more comfortable minivans,” Sheraliyev said, noting that the measures are being taken to ensure safety of passengers.

He added that the “tangem” owners having license to drive public transport might work for Dushanbe’s utility enterprises.  “We could place some 600 “tangem” owners in jobs,” Sheraliyev said.
