KULOB, April 23, 2010, Asia-Plus — A special commission have assessed an actual damage caused by April heavy rains and mudflows to the Shurobod district in Khatlon province.

The Shuroobod chairman Ibrohim Azizov told Asia-Plus that two persons were killed by natural disasters in the district this month.  “The 71-year-old resident of the Shuroobod district Mahmadnazar Qurbonov and the 45-year-old resident of the Darvoz district (Gorno Bdakhshan) were killed by recent mudflows,” Azizov said.

According to him, mudflows have caused serious damage to villages in the Dashtijum and Langar jamoats.  In all, 138 houses have been affected by heavy rainfalls and mudflows; 24 houses are damaged to the extent of being unsuitable for living.  “The worst hit area was the Dashtijum jamoat, where 27 residential buildings have been damaged, many of them are not suitable for living,” Azizov said, adding that disasters also caused serious damage to the agricultural fields in the district.

Mudflows have damaged 47 hectares of areas under grains and 22 hectares of orchards and killed 86 head of cattle in Shuroobod.

Besides, the April disasters damaged 79.5 kilometer of central roads in Shuroobod.

According to the preliminary estimations, damage caused to the Shurooboddistrict by April heavy rains and mudflows amounts to 5.2 million somoni.

We will recall that torrential rain on April 11-12 caused mudflows that affected the Vose, Muminobod, Shuroobod, Baljuvon and Khovaling districts in Khatlon province, the Istaravshan and Ghonchi districts in Sughd province and the Hissar and Fayzobod districts that are subordinate to the center.  The worst hit area was the Vose district in Khatlon.
