DUSHANBE, January 25, 2010, Asia-Plus — Only little more than 50 percent of the country’s population now has access to safe drinking water, Asia-Plus has learned from the source at the Ministry of Land Reclamation and Water Resources (LRWR).
According to him, 1 billion U.S. dollars are needed to provide the whole population of the country with safe drinking water and upgrade the ageing water supply infrastructure. “To achieve these goals, the government adopted the water supply improvement program designed for 2008-2020,” said the source, “The program stipulates that each city, district, jamoat and household in the country will be provided with access to safe drinking water by 2020.”
In 2009, 190 million U.S. dollars, including state funds and investments, were allocated for implementation of this program, the LRWR source added.
