DUSHANBE, November 12, 2009, Asia-Plus  — The second session of the Tajik-Turkmen intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation has opened in Dushanbe today, according to presidential press service.

The meeting participants are discussing the process of implementation of agreements reached between the two countries during President Rahmon’s working visit to Turkmenistan last October. 

We will recall that Tajikistan and Turkmenistan signed four cooperation agreements on October 9.  President Emomali Rahmon and his Turkmen counterpart, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, singed a joint Tajik-Turkmen communiqué.  Besides, Tajik and Turkmen ministers singed an agreement on establishment on Tajik-Turkmen intergovernmental commission for trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, a protocol on cooperation between the MFAs of the two countries, and an agreement on cooperation between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in the sphere of sports and physical culture.

The first meeting of the Tajik-Turkmen economic commission was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in February 2008.  The meeting was co-chaired by Tajik Ministry of Energy and Industries Gul Sherali and Turkmen Minister of Energy and Industries Gurbannur Annaveliyev.

According to data of the State Committee for Statistics, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in January-September 2009 has valued at US$49.9492 million.  This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Turkmenistan estimated at US$275,600 and Tajikistan’s imports from Turkmenistan worth US$49.6736 million.
