A total of 64 people have died in Tajikistan since the beginning of 2026 as a result of accidents and natural disasters, according to the Emergencies Committee under the government.

The Committee reported that from January 1 to May 13, 56 people died in various accidents, while another eight lost their lives in natural disasters.

According to official data, the recorded accidents included:

  • 36 drowning incidents;
  • 9 suicides;

Rescue officials expressed particular concern over the growing number of drownings. During the reporting period, 42 drowning incidents were registered, while six people were rescued.

The Emergencies Committee said its personnel regularly conduct preventive outreach campaigns among residents and schoolchildren on water safety rules.

On May 14, for example, students in schools across Hisor were warned about the dangers of swimming in prohibited areas such as canals and rivers and were advised not to visit bodies of water without adult supervision.

Meanwhile, the Committee reported that 644 natural disasters were recorded across the country during the first four months of the year. Avalanches, mudflows, rockfalls, lightning strikes, and floods killed eight people and led to the rescue of 122 others.

According to the Committee:

  • 3 people died in avalanches;

  • 1 person died from a lightning strike.

Authorities said the total economic damage caused by natural disasters is still being assessed.
