On 28 May, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the city of Khujand in Sughd Province, enabling the city to join the EBRD’s ‘Green Cities’ program.
According to the EBRD Resident Office in Dushanbe, the signing of the memorandum marked an important step towards promoting sustainable urban development in the Republic of Tajikistan and took place during a meeting attended by the Governor of Sughd Province, the Mayor of Khujand and an EBRD delegation led by EBRD Vice-President Mark Bowman.
Following Dushanbe, which joined the program in 2019, Khujand will become the second city in the country to participate in this initiative. This will give Khujand access to a wide range of financial instruments, including grants and concessional financing, to implement priority ‘green’ investments.
The partnership with the EBRD will also enable the development of a comprehensive ‘Green City’ action plan. This will help identify measures to address key environmental challenges, improve resource efficiency and enhance the quality of life for the population.
