KHUJAND, September 5, 2011, Asia-Plus — A ramshackle building of the Khujand railway station that was constructed in 1896 was demolished last weekend and a new modern building will be constructed for the Khujand railway station, Ubaydullo Obidov, an official with the branch of Tajik Railways in Sughd, told Asia-Plus Monday afternoon.
“A modern three-story building housing restaurant, hotel, Internet-center, and waiting room will be constructed for the Khujand railway station,” said Obidov, “The new building will have underground parking lots.”
According to him, the construction of the new railway station building will officially commence on September 7 and “it is expected to be finished in ten months.”
The total length of rails in Tajikistan is 950 kilometers; of that, 680 kilometers are the main railways. At present there are 33 railway stations in the republic and the majority of them have been renovated.
