DUSHANBE, June 25, 2012, Asia-Plus — The local authorities from the districts of Danghara and Qumsangir in Khatlon province have reportedly prevented the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) from organizing events on the occasion of the National Unity Day.
The IRP deputy leader Mahmadali Hoit says the event dedicated to the National Unity Day that was supposed to take place in Qumsangir yesterday was not held because the local authorities did not allow holding it at the local community center. “They justified their refusal by saying that the building belongs to the state and it cannot be used by political parties for holding any events or actions,” Hoit noted.
According to him, the similar situation emerged in the Danghara district. “In Danghara, the local authorities did not allow us to hold the event because our party is not registered as tax payer with the tax inspectorate of the district,” the IRP deputy head added.
Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991. It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999. Its official newspaper is
Najot
(Salvation). According to some sources, IRP now has some 25,000-30,000 members. It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections. The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.
