Tajikistan has the lowest rate of HIV infection among CIS nations, says minister of health

DUSHANBE, July 11, 2012, Asia-Plus  — In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Minister of Health Nusratullo Salimov stated on July 11 that Tajikistan allegedly has the lowest rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among the CIS nations.

To-date, some 4,100 HIV sufferers have been registered in the country, including more than 3,100 men and 940 women.  “Forty-five of the officially registered HIV sufferers in Tajikistan are children,” the minister said.

There are cases of mother-to child HIV transmission, Salimov said.  According to him, the cause of the majority of cases of HIV transmission in children has not yet been diagnosed.

The minister noted that no one case of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through transfusion of contaminated blood components has been reported in Tajikistan so far.

Salimov said that the Republican AIDS Center investigated each of cases of HIV infection in the country.  The minister is certain that Tajikistan has the lowest HIV incidence rate among the CIS nations.
