KHUJAND, July 14, 2012, Asia-Plus – Three suicide cases and four suicide attempts have been reported in the northern Sughd province over two days alone.

An official source at the Interior Ministry’s office in Sughd province said that that the 36-year-old woman from the village of Khurmi in the Panjakent district, R.Z., the 35-year-old woman from the Konibodom district, O.V., and 20-year-old woman from the Mehrobod village in the Asht district committed suicide on July 13.

On July 12, the 57-year-old resident of Khujand, the 20 year-old woman from Khujand, the 49-year-old woman from the city of Qairoqqum and the 10th grade girl from Qairoqqum attempted to commit suicide, but fortunately, their were saved by doctors.        

Local experts say those seven persons have been motivated by economic and family problems.

According to data from the Interior Ministry’s office in Sughd, 159 cases of suicide have been reported in the province over the first six months of this year, which is 38 cases more than in the same period last year.  Men, including ten minors, have reportedly committed suicide in 87 cases and women, including 14 minors, have committed suicide in 72 cases.

It is to be noted that the authorities in the northern Sughd province set up a special group to try to stem an increase in the number of suicides in the area.
