DUSHANBE, August 13, Asia-Plus – President Emomali Rahmon has left for Baku, Azerbaijan, for a two-day official visit.

Azerbaijani news agency Trend quoted Davlatali Nazriyev, the head of the information department of Tajik MFA, as saying that nine bilateral documents are expected to be signed during Rahmon’s visit to Baku.

Tajik MFA official told the Azerbaijani news agency that the sides are supposed to sign agreements on cooperation in the field of free trade, scientific-technical cooperation, avoiding double taxation, communications cooperation, cooperation between the justice ministries of the two countries, and cooperation between the governments on principles of collection of indirect taxes on goods and services.  The sides will also sign a protocol on aerial communication cooperation between the national airlines of the two countries.

According to Trend, Tajik MFA official said that no documents of political nature are planned to be signed during the visit.  “The agreement on friendship and cooperation between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan was signed during an official visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Tajikistan in March this year,” Nazriyev was quoted as saying.

As it had been reported earlier, a high-ranking governmental delegation is accompanying President Rahmon on his first official visit to Azerbaijan.  The main talks are scheduled for today.  President Rahmon will hold private meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart, President Ilham Aliyev, and then negotiations in an enlarged format with participation of members of the governments of the two countries will be held.  During his stay in Baku, Rahmon is also scheduled to hold talks with other high-ranking Azerbaijani state officials.

We will recall that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was on his official visit to Tajikistan on March 15-16 this year.  On March 15, he met with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.  The sides noted that attached great importance to their bilateral relations and indicated their readiness to expand cooperation in all spheres, including economy and trade.  Aliyev also noted that Azerbaijan has decided to open an embassy in Dushanbe.  During Aliyev’s visit to Dushanbe, a number of bilateral cooperation documents, including an agreement on visa-free travel, were signed.
