DUSHANBE, December 27, Asia-Plus  — A roundtable meeting will be held in Dushanbe on December 29 to discuss issues related to the necessity of reforming the country’s law “On the Press and Other Media.” Nouriddin Qarshiboyev, head of the National Association of Independent Media of Tajikistan (Nansmit), told Asia-Plus on Wednesday.   

According to him, Akbarali Sattorov, head of Tajik Journalists’ Union, Muhiddin Kabilri, Tajik MP also leader of the Islamic Revival Party (IRPT), Saidmurod Fattoyev, State Adviser to the Tajik President for Social Development and Public Relations, and Professor Ibrohim Usmonov from Tajik National University are expected to address the meeting, which is staged by Nansmit, Tajik Journalists’ Union, Republican Press Center, Tajikistan’s Media Alliance and some other public associations dealing with protection of media and journalists rights. 

“A special working group was set up in October this year to prepare proposals on how to improve the law on the Press and other Media [Organizations],” said the Nansmit head, “The commission members include known Tajik journalists, and lawyer.” 

Professor Ibrohim Usmonov will report on the results of commission’s work and lawyer Farrukhsho Junaydov will present legal comments.

The law on the Press and other Media was adopted in Tajikistan on December 14, 1990, and various changes and addenda were made to it in 1992, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2002.
