DUSHANBE, March 3, Asia-Plus  — Victory pf Dmitry Medvedev in the Russian presidential polls will have a positive impact on the political situation in Tajikistan, Abdughani Mamadazimov, the head of the Association of political Scientists of Tajikistan, remarked in an interview with Asia-Plus today.

According to him, on of priorities of the new Russian president will be resolving the demographic problem, and “Tajik migrants will most likely be considered probable resources for this.”  “This will allow tackling problems facing our migrants in Russia and attitude to them should become softer,” the political scientist said.

Mamadazimov noted that speaking to journalists at his headquarters on Monday, Medvedev noted that relations with CIS states are the main foreign political priority for Russia. “Most likely, he has meant Central Asia’s countries,” said he.  “And it is logical because central Asia the only region where Russia does not have any pressing problems.”

Moreover, the Russian military base deployed in Tajikistan is one of important factors to contribute to further expansion cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia, the expert said.

He added that the results of the Russian presidential polls are of great political importance for Tajikistan as Russia is one of “the main players” in Central Asia

On the Russian presidential polls themselves, Mamadazimov said that “continuity of policy has won in Russia.”

On the further activity of Vladimir Putin, he expressed confidence that he will not work in the position of prime minister for a long time.  “He will just set things going and after that he will keep in the background,” the Tajik expert said.

We will recall that Medvedev has asked Putin, who was prevented by term limits from running for re-election, to be his prime minister.

According to Reuters, analysts note that it is still not clear which of the two will really be in charge of Russia, and they question if their power-sharing arrangement can last long in a nation accustomed to having a single, strong leader.
