KHUAJND, June 28, 2008, Asia-Plus  — A session of the council for railway transport of the CIS and Baltic states ended in Khuajnd, the capital of Sughd province on June 26.

Representatives of 13 countries, except Turkmenistan and Armenia, attended the Khujand session, which considered 33 issues related to rail shipments in the CIS and Baltic states, including safety of rail traffic and technical instructions on use of train cars.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Mahmoud Bobokalonov, director of the Mahram car-repair plant within the Tajik Railways, said that they had applied to their colleagues for permission to do work on extending service life of train cars.

“We currently make major repairs to passenger carriages and cargo cars, while for extending their service life, we have to send them the car-repair plants in Russian and Uzbekistan,” said Bobokalonov, “Having studied documentation and opportunities of our plant, the council came to a conclusion that the Mahram car-repair plant is able to do such work.”

According to him, their specialists will go to Moscow in the near future to draw all necessary documents and get license.

We will recall that at present Tajik Railways offers three routes to the Russian Federation (Dushanbe-Moscow, Kulob-Moscow, Khujand-Saratov) and four domestic routes (Dushanbe-Konibodom, Qurghon Teppa-Konibodom, Dushanbe-Pakhtaobod and Qurghon Teppa-Kulob).

The total length of rails in Tajikistan is 950 kilometers; of that, 680 kilometers are the main railways.  At present there are 31 railway stations in the republic.
