KHUJAND, September 24, 2008, Asia-Plus — A sudden spike in fitting prices has affected the construction sector in northern Tajikistan.

According to the deputy Sughd governor, Akram Qosimov, the fitting prices have doubled in the province recently.

“This year, Sughd has needed fittings at the rate of some 3,000-3,500 tons of fittings of different diameter per month,” said the Sughd official, “Russia and China provide the bulk of Tajikistan’s fitting imports.  Earlier, Chinese fittings were cheaper than the Russian ones, while their prices have become almost equal lately.”

Mostly, small enterprises have been engaged in delivering fittings to the province and there is no any large company dealing with fitting deliveries, Qosimov said.

More than 100 facilities are currently being constructed in northern Tajikistan.  The largest of them are the central stadium in Khujand and presidential lyceum in Chkalovsk.
