DUSHANBE, September 26, 2008, Asia-Plus  — President Emomali Rahmon has offered the holding of a special session of the UN General Assembly for comprehensive consideration and solution of water problems.

According to presidential press service, he remarked this yesterday while delivering a statement at the 63 rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“Solution of the topical water-related problems and expansion of international cooperation in the water sphere are tasks of International Decade for Action: “Water for Life” 2005-2015,” said Rahmon, “Over the past several years, a great number of events have been held at different levels, however, the problem remains acute.  Therefore, to ensure comprehensive consideration and solution of the water problems and consolidation of efforts taken at national, regional and international levels, Tajikistan suggests that the UN General Assembly should hold the special session to assess the progress of implementation of tasks of the Water Decade and define priority areas for further actions.”
