DUSHANBE, November 11, 2008, Asia-Plus — 1,332 tons of wheat seeds purchased for this year’s sowing campaign have been distributed to 320 farming units across the country, Asia-Plus has learned from Narzullo Dadaboyev, a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).
According to him, 742 tons of wheat seeds have been delivered to the country from Russia’s Krasnodar region.
The high-yielding wheat varieties Starshina, Batko, Tania, Nota, and Lastochka purchased from Krasnodar allow having harvests at the rate of 5-6 tons per hectare, the spokesman said.
Besides, 590 tons of wheat seeds have been purchased from seed-growing farms inside the country – 390 tons have been purchased from the seed-growing farm in the Isfara district and 200 tons have been purchased from the seed-growing farm named after Latif Murod in the Hissor district.
“Tajik selectionists have developed high-yielding varieties of wheat such as Sham, President, Alex, Norman, Somoni, Oriyon, Ziorat-70, Sadoqat, and Iqbol,” said Dadaboyev, “However, the number of these seeds is not enough for carrying out successful wheat-sowing campaign.”
