KHOROG, November 18, 2008, Asia-Plus  — According to official data, more than 12 percent of the population of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Gorno Badakhshan or GBAO) are outside the region in search of seasonal work, Mamedi Nazirov, an official with the GBAO agency for employment, migration and social protection of the population, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.   

According to him, the results of census of households have shown that more than 27,000 residents of Gorno Badakhshan are currently outside the region.

“An estimated more than 23,500 seasonal workers from Gorno Badakhshan have traveled primarily to the Russia Federation (22,198 people) but also Kazakhstan (418), Kyrgyzstan (328), Ukraine (157) and other CIS states (164),” said Nazirov, “Besides, 3,400 seasonal workers from Gorno Badakhshan are now in other regions of Tajikistan – Some 2,000 are currently in Dushanbe, 182 in the Khatlon province, 271 in the Sughd province and 142 are in district subordinate to the center.”
