DUSHANBE, November 27, 2008, Asia-Plus  — A meeting of Tajik and Kyrgyz security council secretaries that was held in Batken, Kyrgyzstan on November 25 resulted in signing of a cooperation document.

At first, Security Council Secretary Amirqul Azimov and his Kyrgyz counterpart Adakhan Madumraov held a bilateral meeting and after this, they held an extended-format meeting with participation of members of the government commissions of the two countries.  The sides discussed issues related to delineation of the common border and the progress of implementation of decisions made at the previous meeting that was held in Isfara, Tajikistan on April 29 this year.

According to Ferghana.ru, the sides reached an agreement on building a 24-kilometer road to bypass the Tajik territory and a bridge in the area near the Kyrgyz village of Kok-Tash, where there is a 175-meter disputable territory.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Madaminjon Dodojonov, a senior adviser with the Tajik Security Council, confirmed this information.  However, he refrained from giving further details of the meeting.

We will recall that the April 29 meeting participants agreed to set up commissions at levels of heads of provinces and districts of the two countries for preventing and settling conflict situations.  They also agreed to ban any economical activity in the disputable territories until the border delineation work is completed.

A total length of Tajikistan’s common border with Kyrgyzstan is 970 kilometers.
