KULOB, February 13, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Wind-powered generators for wind power plants have been delivered to Khatlon’s Shuroobod, Baljuvon and Farkhor districts, the head of the Kulob regional electric systems enterprise Mirzo Ismoilov said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, installation of the wind turbines will start within the next few days.  “Each of these wind power plants will have capacity of 20 kW that will allow providing up to 60 households with power,” said Ismoilov, “The energy projects management unit at Barqi Tojik power holding will fund installation of the wind-powered generators.”

In the meantime, the supply of daily electricity to the Kulob districts, except Danghara and Kulob, still remains only 3 megawatt-hour.  It is enough to keep vital sites, especially pump stations, in the district centers operational during only two or three hours, Ismoilov said.

It is to be noted that use of wind power for generating electricity is growing rapidly in the world.  At the end of 2008, worldwide nameplate capacity of wind-powered generators was 120.8 gigawatts.  Although wind produces only about 1.5% of worldwide electricity use, it is growing rapidly, having doubled in the three years between 2005 and 2008.  In several countries it has achieved relatively high levels of penetration, accounting for approximately 19% of electricity production in Denmark, 10% in Spain and Portugal, and 7% in Germany and the republic of Ireland in 2008.
