KHUJAND, February 18, 2009, Asia-Plus — Another alleged activist of the outlawed Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has been detained in northern Tajikistan.
According to the Sughd prosecutor’s office, the 40-year-old resident of the town of Isfara, Mirzosaid Yunusov, was detained on suspicion of being member of the IMU.
The source noted that in collusion with the leader of the IMU cell for Isfara Anvar Qayumov, Yunusov had been delivering building materials and foods to the mountain areas near the village of Shurtang “for preparation of special underground training.” When searching Yunusov’s house, police officers found subversive literature.
Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Yunusov under the provisions of two articles of Tajikistan’s Penal Code – Article 36, Part 5 (criminal complicity) and Article 187 (organization of criminal grouping).
The source noted that five alleged members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan had been detained in the province since the beginning of this year.
