IMF to provide financial support to Tajikistan to reduce poverty, mitigate financial crisis effect

DUSHANBE, February 18, 2009, Asia-Plus  — On Wednesday February 18, President Emomali Rahmon received Mr. Axel Schimmelpfennig, the head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) mission to Tajikistan.

According to presidential press service, Mr. Schimmelpfennig briefed Tajik president on work carried out by the IMF mission over the past two weeks.

During the meeting, it was noted that the government and relevant departments of the country had fulfilled all requirements for further cooperation with the Fund and other international financial institutions, the press service said, citing the head of IMF’s mission as saying, “The first round of negotiations on expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the Fund on development of a new interaction project concluded successfully.”

Under this program, the IMF will provide financial support to Tajikistan for alleviation of poverty and mitigation of effects of the global financial crisis, according to presidential press service.
