At least 16 people died in a massive landslide Thursday morning in Aksy district, Jalalabad region of Kyrgyzstan.

As the Kyrgyz Emergency Ministry reports, the Emergency Chief with rescue crews has left for the landslide worst hit area – the village of Raikomol.

At the moment about 200 volunteers from the nearby villages headed by the district governor Talant Orozov try to clear up the damage with their own efforts. According to preliminary data, at least 16 persons, members of five families may be trapped under the mudflows.

As the Kyrgyz Emergency Chief Kamchibek Tashiev informed the news agency “24.kg” a convoy of clearing equipment is now headed to the Aksy region from Osh and is expected to reach its destination in about an hour and a half.
