Name of the only presidential candidate from the opposition was voiced in Bishkek the other day. It is the former Prime Minister Almazbek Atambaev. The decision was made by the Joined People’s Movement through long weeks of debates and talks. “The decision was difficult but the only optimal at the time,” the opposition members told the news agency “24.kg”.

Almazbek Atambaev is the leader of the Kyrgyz Social-Democratic Party. He was the member of the government after the Tulip Revolution of March 24, 2005 but resigned having voiced his disagreement with the reforms realized by the authorities. Atambaev was the active participant of the opposition’s meetings in autumn 2006. In spring 2007 he took the lead of the Kyrgyz government, explaining his decision by “critical social and political situation in the country.”

After some time the ex-prime minister settled on the post of the KSDP leader.
