DUSHANBE, April 30, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Deputies of the lower chamber (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament considered and approved the labor protection bill at an April 30 meeting, presided over by the chamber speaker, Saydullo Khairulloyev.

Presenting the draft law, Labor and Social Protection Minister Shukurjon Zuhurov noted that the standing labor protection law was adopted in 1991 already and it now did not meet realities of today’s Tajikistan.

Under the present conditions, the old law will not be able to properly ensure safety of labor and conduct of state examination of labor, the minister said.

“In 1992-2007, some 3,500 people in the country were killed in accidents at work and some 19,000 others in the country sustained employment injuries and,” said Zuhurov, “Many of those injured and families of those who died in accidents at work have not yet received compensations because there is no appropriate legislation.”

The minister also noted that Tajikistan did not have specialists in labor protection matters and the new labor protection law provided for training of such specialists.

Parliamentarians approved the new labor protection law by a majority vote.
