DUSHANBE, May 4, 2009, Asia-Plus — Tajik police reported on May 4 that they have dismantled a transnational drug gang dealing with smuggling narcotics out of Afghanistan.
According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI), police officers detained resident of Khatlon’s Rumi district Mahmoud Sharifov in the Panj district, Khatlon district on May 1. “When searching his Volkswagen Passat, police officers found 31.437 kilograms of raw opium,” said the source at a MoI, “Further operation led to the arrest of Afghan national Islomiddin valadi Khojaboy and Turkish national Ubaidulla Chakar.” Later, a pistol TT was found in Sharifov’s house in Rumi, he said.
Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.
