New civil passports, containing electronic information medium about personal biometric parameters of their owners and having high protection level, will be introduced in Uzbekistan.

Islam Karimov signed an order, according to which from January 1, 2010, with the purpose of providing security to international civil air navigation, increasing protection level of identification documents from falsification, operative and accurate personal identification when crossing state border, biometric passports will be introduced, on June 23.

Introduction of new passport will be realized in two stages. First will be conducted in 2010 for employees of Ministries, departments, and institutions of the republic, sole proprietors, leaving the country or residing abroad, and also citizens, receiving passports, who reached particular age. Other citizens will receive biometric passports during second stage in 2011-2015.

Given introduction is realized in accordance with Chicago convention on international civil aviation (December 1944) and Montreal Assembly of International civil aviation organization, member of which Uzbekistan is, resolution (2004). According to the documents, states-members of ICAO have to provide introduction of biometric passports no later than 2010.

Nowadays passports with biometric parameters are introduced in more than 100 countries.
