DUSHANBE, August 4, 2009, Asia-Plus  — All categories farms have gathered some 500,000 tons of wheat from 204,000 hectares of farmland since the beginning of this year, which is 200,000 tons more than in the same period of last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

Average wheat yields have been estimated at 2.64 tons per hectares, while last year, average wheat yields were only 1.9 tons/ha.

Farmers in the northern Sughd province have gathered wheat from 90 percent of areas under this agricultural crop to this date.

Khatlon farmers have gathered harvest from 88.6 percent of areas under wheat and so far, while districts subordinate to the center (RRPs) have gathered harvest from 64 percent of areas under wheat.

Farmers in Gorno Badakhshan have not yet launched the grain harvesting campaign because of weather conditions.

This year, Tajik farmers have planted wheat on more than 400,000 hectares of lands, the MoA source said.
