DUSHANBE, September 14, 2009, Asia-Plus — In January-August 2009, the external trade turnover of Tajikistan, including electrical power and natural gas, has amounted to 2.162154 billion U.S. dollars, which was 69.8 percent of the January-August 2008 level or 936.075 million dollars fewer, according to figures provided the Customs Service.
The trade balance was negative and amounted to 1.056754 billion US dollars.
Exports of goods in January-August 2009 amounted to 552.700 million US dollars, which was 54.9 percent, or 450.500 million dollars, fewer than in the same period of 2008.
Imports of goods into the country over the report period have amounted to 1.609454 billion US dollars, which was 23.2 percent or 485.775 million dollars fewer than in January-August 2008.
As usual, primary aluminum, cotton fiber and electrical power were the main items of Tajikistan’s exports over the same eight-month period.
In January-August 2009, Tajikistan has exported 221,862 tons of primary aluminum for US$339.959 million, which is 45,194 tons and US$421,656 fewer than in the same period of last year.
Over the report period, Tajikistan has exported 57,833 tons of cotton fiber for 77.786 million U.S. dollars, which is 9,259 tons or 26,845 U.S. dollars fewer than in January-August 2008.
