KULOB, September 23, 2009, Asia-Plus — Five cotton-growing districts in Khatlon’s Kulob zone have yielded the first 10,000 tons of raw cotton by September 23, which is 21,921 tons fewer than in the same period of last year, Asia-Plus has learned from Hamrokhon Hoitov, a leading specialist with the Kulob agriculture directorate.

According to him, 16,000 people worked in cotton plantations in the Kulob zone on September 22 and they picked on average 33 kilograms of raw cotton each.

“Kulob cotton farmers are still gathering cotton without help from employees of local enterprises and students,” Hoitov said.

The Vose district currently tops the cotton-growing districts in the Kulob zone in terms of cotton harvesting.  “Cotton farmers in Vose have reached 22.2 percent of their target to this date and cotton-growing farms in Hamadoni and Farkhor districts have reached 13 percent of this year’s target each,” the leading specialist said.

This year, the Kulob zone plans to yield 69,875 tons of raw cotton.
