KULOB, November 13, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Amrokhon Safarov, the head of the organization of Masoud Sobirov-run Democratic Party (DPT) in Khatlon’s Kulob zone, told Asia-Plus today that the Democrats do not believe that the upcoming elections to the parliament and local legislatures will be fair and transparent.

“However, we have decided to nominate at least three candidates for the Kulob city legislature (Majlis),” said Safarov.  “We do not trust in fairness of the election system of the country but participation in elections is currently the only way to familiarize people with our view of the situation and our proposals how to improve life.”

He added that the DPT organization in Kulob would nominate Masoud Sobirov as a candidate for the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament).
