DUSHANBE, March 11, 2010, Asia-Plus — Two Tajik boxers have qualified for the 2010 World Youth Championships that will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan in April this year.

According to Murodali Teshayev, a spokesman for Tajikistan’s National Olympic Committee (NOC), two Tajik boxers, Nodir Muhammadiyev (81 kg) and the 218cm tall and 116kg super heavyweight Mehrojiddin Karimov, qualified for the 2010 World Youth Chamionships, finishing third in their weight categories at the 2010 Asian Youth Boxing Championships that took place in Iran on March 2-10 this year.

“The best Asian youth boxers, born from January 1, 1992 until December 31, 1993, competed in the championships in Iran,” said the spokesman, “Tajikistan was represented by seven boxers in Iran.”

Twenty countries and 140 athletes took part in Tehran, including delegations from China, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

In the meantime, some media report that the 2010 World Youth Boxing Championships in Baku is a qualifying event for the first Youth Olympic Games that will be held in Singapore in the summer.
