DUSHANBE, April 6, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Ways to expand cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations and role of Tajik parliament in expanding this cooperation were a major topic of a meeting of visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon with the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) Chairman Shukurjon Zuhurov that took place in Dushanbe on April 5.

According to the Majlisi Namoyandagon press service, Tajik speaker briefed the UN secretary-general on the parliamentary elections that were held in the country on February 28.  Concerning activity of the lower chamber of parliament, Zuhurov noted that the Majlisi Namoyandagon has ratified 419 agreements, protocols and international conventions to this day.

Mr. Ban, for his part, congratulated Mr. Zuhurov on his election as speaker and expressed hope that the new speaker would create favorable conditions for expansion of cooperation between the Tajik parliament and the UN agencies, the press service said.
