DUSHANBE, April 8, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Tajik police has warded off an attempt of smuggling more than 50 kilograms of Afghan narcotics into the country through Khatlon province.

According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI), an operation carried out by police officers in the Farkhor district on April 7 led to the arrest of the 68-year-old Afghan national Mustafa waladi Mashafi (phonetically spelled).  Three packages containing 43.6 kilograms of marijuana and 7.54 kilograms of heroin were confiscated from him.

The same day, the 26-year-old Khurshedsho Sultonshoyev was detained in Dushanbe on suspicion of having been involved in drug pushing.  A package containing 590 grams of hashish was confiscated from him.  “When searching his house, police officers found another 1.53 kilograms of hashish,” the source at a MoI said.

Over the first three months of this year, Tajik police have reportedly seized 715 kilograms of drugs, which 211 kilograms more than in the same period of 2009.  A totaled included  225 kilograms of heroin, 215 kilograms of raw opium, 275 kilograms of cannabis and 2,305 psychotropic pills, the source said.
